No we’re not reviewing Ammo. LOL. I’m still getting ready for NaNoWriMo so i want to limber up by writing something every day. Since i finished my last short story project i don’t want to start something new only a week before Nano.
So I’m going to thumb through my list of read books and give a quick review of the story. Whatever jolts from the memory vaults so to speak. So here we go:
#3. Fear of Gravity by Brian Keene. Keene is one of the few authours whose short story collections i can read from beginning to end. If you’re a regular reader you already know that i usually only read one or two stories from an antho at a time and then put the book aside. Reading a bunch of short stories in a row seems to burn me out. I like getting into a long story rich in character. That said this was a good collection of stories… my fav is I am an Exit. Keene’s “Exit Killer” is a very interesting character… made more so by his only appearing in two tales (currently) but there are a lot of hints as to his purpose and past. I believe he is supposed to be one of the main characters in the upcoming, A Gathering of Crows. It’s kinda like the “Fett-Factor”… to explain, Boba Fett is one of the coolest and most loved characters in the Star Wars triology… but whY? IN the original triology he has like 10 mintutes of screen time in the entire 9 hours of movies. Matter of fact when they did the rerelease they added in like another 8 minutes of just Fett in the backgrounds and such. He’s cool because of what he does, his look, and his attitude. The mystery. Exit is the same, he’s mysterious and doing horrible things but we want to know why? Thus he has a fan base among the FUKU.
#8. The Wheelman by Swierczynski… this bok was my first step into crime novels. I’ve read a lot of “Cop” books but i’ve never read a stark novel or Westlake, etc. This is the story of a mute driver and is firmly in the noir tradition. Hard people, hard crime, and enough twists and turns and missed oppurtunites to have you rushing along and just wishing the timing would hiccup and things would work out. But the tension keeps going, keeps you on the edge and it delivers. Hits you with a hammer and throws you in thew trunk and you’re going for a ride whether you want to or not. Highly reccomended.
#14. Manuscript: Aeternus Umbra by Tom Erb. Well this isn’t availible to the public yet… but you should put it on your short list. Tom is gonna make his break out with this novel. He gives us zombies and coming of age… two of my favourite things. If you were a child or teen in the heart of the 80’s this is going to be a fun book for you. The music, the cars, the people will strike a cord. If you happen to also like zombies shredding people, the machinations of a twisted soul, the struggle to survive, and dynamic character growth within an overarcing mythology that just happens to have a zombie apocalypse as its backdrop…. whew… then once again this is the book for you. (Tom feel free to take any of that as a blurb man.)
ok We’re doing three for today… i was randomly rolling a die to pick from the list and i just rolled two other books that recieved full reviews and the 2nd draft of Aeternus… so we’ll be taking a break… tomorrow i will give you three more reviews all from the month of….? July. Three reads from July. See you then.
